Li Zi is co-founder of RCDG (Rural Community Development Group) | i-village, and a guest researcher at Alibaba New Rural Institute. He is also an PhD Candidate at National University of Singapore. He got M.S.C. in Urbanism at Delft University of Technology. He leads the team’s focus on the rural online service in Zhejiang ,China, especially to practice the strategy of rural e-commerce station framework. His wrote an book- “Rise of Ecommerce in Rural China: From E-commerce Service in County to the On-line Urbanization”. He has been interviewed the editor in chief of China of Economist and the Economist Global Busines Review and design magazine “domus China” about his practice and research.
From Urban Area to Rural Area : Online Urbanization
nline services, especially e-commerce, present a potential solution and may have the capacity to create a new urban-rural relationship. Cases studies of Suichang rural e-commerce model and Alibaba rural strategy act as a premise in understanding the new urban-rural relationship impacted created by online services, triggering spatial regeneration of local areas and regional restructuring in China. These case studies are analyzed on the basis of more than two years of field-studies and first-hand observations in rural Chinese villages adopting e-commerce.
The refraction introduces a new framework for online life and attempts to respond to existing theories, where online urbanization is manifested in five aspects: 1) the fostering and flowing of urban and rural human resources, 2) improvement of urban and rural logistics supply chain, 3) the narrowing of urban and rural information gap, 4) effective resource allocation and 5) urban-rural ecological and cultural progress. In this way, the urban and rural areas are unified as one network; different nodes of flowing factors and their touch points are integrated into the regional and even global production chain and living system.
