丹尼尔•罗斯 （Daniel Ross）：写自身（ Seminar 1: Writing the Self）

In the early part of his career, the French philosopher Michel Foucault explored how power operates in institutions, devising the concept of a ‘disciplinary society’ modelled on the behavioural effects of Bentham’s panopticon prison surveillance. But later in his career, Foucault became interested in ancient practices of another kind, those associated not with subjugating the individual to the dictates of an authority but rather with the techniques and technics of the self and its relation to others through the process that Foucault calls ‘subjectivation’. Through the disciplined use of such practices, the self becomes who they are, which also means: who they are for others. In this seminar, we will read Foucault’s text, ‘Self Writing’, which examines the role of writing practices in what amounts to a process of cultivation.
